Inside The Newborn Days: A Look at Our First Newborn Care + 4th Trimester Workshop
It happened! 🤍
This past weekend, a room full of soon-to-be parents gathered upstairs at the Nelson Visitor Centre for the very first The Newborn Days Workshop — a hands-on, half-day workshop all about the fourth trimester and those first tender weeks with a newborn. I've been dreaming about this class for a long time, and getting to finally spend a Saturday with these families was every bit as good as I'd hoped! My educator heart is FULL 🤍
I wanted to share a peek inside the day — for anyone wondering whether it's the right fit for them.
What the day actually felt like (spoiler: it was awesome!)
Here's the thing I most wanted The Newborn Days to be: not a lecture. And it wasn't.
With an intimate group of couples, a cozy space, tea and (lots) of snacks, and plenty of time to get up and move, it felt less like a class and more like a morning spent with friends and a big sis who’s been there - the kind who tells you what's actually normal and answers the questions you didn’t know you had yet.
We had a few laughs, and learned a lot about each other and what to expect in this HUGE, exciting life transition. AND there was a lot of permission-giving: permission to find the newborn weeks hard, to ask for help, and to do things your own way.
It was my goal to curate a space where soon-to-be parents felt safe to share their experiences, questions, and be vulnerable - to be excited, but also share where they had worry or some anxiety about the unknowns of new parenthood.
What we covered
In one relaxed half-day, we worked through the real, practical stuff of the fourth trimester:
Getting to know your newborn - reading their cues, understanding their surprising little quirks, the “weird but normal” things, and building a soothing toolkit for the witching hour
Daily care, hands-on - diapering, bathing, swaddling, and all the everyday basics, practiced on demo dolls
Feeding in the real world - the honest version, whatever feeding looks like for you, and knowing when to reach out for help
Safe sleep, simplified - what's normal, and how to set it up safely
Babywearing - my favourite part! Partners got some hands-on time with real wraps find what felt right and learn about safe, and healthy babywearing
Caring for you - because recovery, rest, and your mental health matter just as much as your baby's needs
Building your village - and how partners, community services, and support people can genuinely help
Everyone went home with a beautiful take-home workbook full of references for those blurry early days - I designed the workbook to be something to keep on the counter, to act as a quick-reference guide and provide resources as the those days and weeks go by with their little ones.
Aside from the workbook - I hope all the families went home with a bit more confidence than they walked in with 🩷
A little gratitude
Building something like this is never a solo effort. Thank you to the families who trusted me with their Saturday and their questions — you made the first one so special. And thank you to this community, which has cheered this workshop on from the very beginning!
Why the fourth trimester deserves this
If there's one idea at the heart of The Newborn Days, it's this: the newborn weeks were never meant to be done alone, and they're not a mystery you just have to survive. A little preparation — and a bit of support — changes everything.
Most of us spend months getting ready for birth and almost no time getting ready for The 4th Trimester — the very stretch where new parents feel the most untethered. I made this workshop to help close that gap, gently and honestly.
