Find your Village: The Nelson & West Kootenays Guide to Pregnancy, Mom & New-Parent Groups
Okay, before we start - "It takes a village" gets tossed around a lot, I know. For many parents-to-be, or new parents - the social support and community can feel a bit sparse (it sure did for me!). BUT, the good news: there is community for you in our little mountain town, it’s just a little tucked away. So to make things easy - I did the digging for you, and rounded up the pregnancy circles, mom-and-baby meetups, and new-parent groups happening right here in Nelson and across the West Kootenays.
Bookmark this one. Send it to the friend who just told you her news. Let's go find your village 🤍
First things first: why bother finding a group?
Because pregnancy and new parenthood can be both magical and also really isolating at times - especially if you're the first in your friend group to do it, or you've just moved to the Kootenays and your "village" is three provinces away.
Showing up to a drop-in when you're seven months pregnant and don't know a soul is intimidating. I get it.
But I promise you: everyone in that room was the nervous new person once. Walk in, grab a tea, and you'll almost always leave with at least one "oh, you too?!" moment… and that’s the whole point 🙂
If you're expecting (or trying to conceive)
Kootenay Bump Club 🤍
Okay, I'm biased — this one's mine (and my pal Sarah's 🩷). Kootenay Bump Club is "Tea, Talk & Trimesters": a free, low-key monthly meet-up at Izzy's Cafe Market for pregnant folks and parents-to-be across Nelson and the West Kootenays. There’s no class, no workshop, no structured agenda - just grab a drink, sit down with other folks in the same season of life. Sarah and I created this group with the goal of supporting pregnant folks and parents-to-be in building friendships that they can carry through pregnancy, parental leave, and beyond.
Come as you are. Come once, come every month, come late, come with a friend. Sarah and I are both local doulas, so we're always happy to share resources or answer your pregnancy, birth, and parenthood questions.
Beyond the monthly café hang, we also host the occasional Bump About Town outing - special bump-friendly events to mix things up. Our first was a pottery painting night at MUD Ceramics on Baker Street, and there's more coming down the pike.
Want in on the next one? Join our private Facebook Group to stay in the loop and connect with other pregnant folks! Note: we keep this Facebook group private to provide some additional privacy for those group members who may not be ready to share their big news.
Where: Izzy's Café Market, 655 BC-3A, Nelson, BC (ramp access, accessible washroom, and free parking out front)
When: Third Tuesday of every month, 4:30 - 6:00 PM
Cost: Free - just grab a treat to support Izzy's while you're there
Who it's for: First-timers, growing families, and anyone trying to conceive. Any stage, all welcome. 🌈

Bellies 2 Babies — Kootenay Kids Society
Another one I send people to. It's a free, drop-in program for anyone expecting a baby or parenting a little one up to 12 months old. Come as you are — you'll find other pregnant folks and new parents, plus genuinely useful support like grocery vouchers, free prenatal vitamins, baby clothes, and feeding help. Zero pressure, all warmth.
Where: Kootenay Kids Family Resource Centre, 312 Silica Street, Nelson, BC
When: Tuesdays, 12:30pm - 2pm. Free lunch included!
Good to know: The programme has some closures during the Summer and holiday seasons, keep an eye out on the Kootenay Kids website for the most up-to-date information.
Prenatal fitness & movement classes
Movement, breath, and a room full of growing bellies! Prenatal yoga, strength, pilates, and barre classes are one of the most natural places to meet other parents-to-be (hello, future mat-leave workout buddies! 👯♀️). Nelson's lineup shifts with the seasons, so instead of squeezing it all in here, I keep a full, up-to-date roundup in its own post: Where to Move Your Bump: Prenatal Fitness Classes in Nelson & the West Kootenays. Bring water, tell the instructor you're expecting, and go say hi to the person on the next mat 👋
Once baby's here: your 0–12 month lifeline
Nelson Family Place — Kootenay Kids Society
Think of this as the living room you didn't know you needed. Drop-in play, literacy groups, a toy lending library (this is SO awesome!), and - crucially - other adults to talk to while your baby plays. On the hard days, sometimes just getting out of the house to a place that expects you (spit-up and all) is exactly what you need.
Book Babes — Nelson Public Library
Rhymes, songs, and stories for the 0–18 month crowd and their grown-ups. Your baby won't "get it" yet, and that's not the point — it's early literacy, gentle routine, and a soft landing into a community of caregivers. Usually a weekday-morning drop-in; peek at the library's calendar for the current schedule.
Where: Nelson Public Library, 602 Stanley Street, Nelson, BC
When: Tuesdays @ 10:30am
Free Postpartum Support Group — Lupine Counselling & Wellness
A free, 4-week series that gathers moms and mother-figures in a warm, judgment-free space to share, listen, and be reminded that what you're feeling is normal. Run by counsellors, this is a safe space to be vulnerable, build real connections, and learn real tools for your wellbeing. If the early weeks are feeling heavy, this is a gentle, no-pressure first step.
Where: Lupine Counselling & Wellness, 607B Front Street, Nelson, BC
When: Wednesdays, 5:00 – 6:30 PM, run in 4-week cohorts through the year. See Lupine’s website for up-to-date group information.
Who it's for: Mothers/mother-figures of babies 0–12 months Cost: Free — pre-registration required Good to know: Groups rotate and fill up, so check their current calendar to grab a spot.
As they grow: drop-ins that keep giving
StrongStart BC
Free, drop-in early learning for kids from birth to five, running during the school year in Nelson and Crawford Bay. Songs, stories, play, and snacks - and a built-in community of local families you'll keep bumping into for years.
Where: Locations rotate day-to-day between West Kootenay communities, see the kootenaykids.ca website for up-to-date info.
When: Weekdays, 9am - 12pm
Beyond Nelson: the wider Kootenays
If you're out in the Slocan Valley, Castlegar, Trail, or beyond, here are some other local options:
Kootenay Family Place (Castlegar) - family programs including their Beautiful Beginnings support for expecting and new parents.
Family Action Network / FAIR (Trail) - including Building Beautiful Babies.
Your care team counts as community, too
Community isn't only playgroups - it's the people holding you through the actual birth. If you're weighing your options for care in the Kootenays:
Midwives - Kootenay Born Midwifery, Blue Heron Midwifery, Apple Tree Maternity, Colibri Midwifery offers personal midwifery care across Nelson and the surrounding communities.
Doulas - a Doula (hi, that's me 👋) is your continuous, non-clinical support through pregnancy, birth, and beyond. There's a warm little doula community in the area, and finding the right fit matters.
A note from me
Here's my honest hope for you: that you walk into one of these rooms a stranger and walk out with a text thread that carries you through the newborn fog. That's what community does. It doesn't make parenting easy - nothing does - but it makes it shared, and that can be the distinction that matters.
And if part of what you're craving is someone in your corner specifically for the birth itself - helping you build a birth plan you actually feel good about, prepping you so you walk in confident instead of worried - that's exactly what I do. I offer 1:1 childbirth education and birth planning virtually (so distance is no object, whether you're in Nelson or across the country), plus in-person birth support, birth photography, and birth pool and equipment rentals right here in Nelson and the West Kootenays.
Come say hi on Instagram @thebirthlaine - that's where I share the real, the helpful, and the sometimes a bit silly, tips on navigating pregnancy, birth, and postpartum.
You were never meant navigate this season along. Let's find your village 🙌
A quick heads-up: group days, times, and offerings can change often, especially seasonally and around the school calendar. Always double-check directly with each organization before you go. If you know of a local group I missed, send me a note, hello@thebirthlaine.com and I'll add it - this list is for all of us! 🤍
