Eco-Friendly Home Birth Swaps: Low-Plastic ✔️ Reusable ✔️ Doula-Approved.

Eco-friendly home birth essentials Canada featuring low-plastic products like glass tumbler, wooden labour comb, organic postpartum underwear and reusable birth supplies

If you’re planning a home birth and feeling drawn to a more intentional, eco-friendly, low-plastic setup, you’re not alone.

Many of the families I support who are planning a home birth want their birth space to feel:

  • calm

  • grounded

  • non-clinical

  • aligned with their values

And while birth doesn’t need to be “perfectly eco-friendly” (because let’s be real, birth is often messy), there are a few simple swaps that can make your environment feel more aligned with your values and less overwhelming.

Below are some of my favourite eco-friendly, doula-approved home birth “swaps” to consider while you’re preparing for your home birth.

Glass Drinking Cup (with 👏 a 👏 straw!)

👉 Glass Tumbler with Straw and Lid, Glass Water Bottle with Silicone Sleeve 20oz

Why it makes the list:

Hydration during labour is essential, but how you hydrate can make a big difference.

A glass water bottle or tumbler with a straw:

  • Makes it easier to sip without lifting your head (your doula or birth partner just needs to bring the straw to your lips)

  • Glass body = less plastic, healthier option

  • Clear vessel so your support people can keep better tabs on when you need a refill

Doula tip: In labour many folks need reminders to drink. Taking small sips from a straw offered between contractions makes hydration easy, and consistent.

Wooden Labour Combs

👉 Sandalwood Labour Comb for Pain Management

Why it makes the list:

This is one of the simplest, most effective tools I recommend to Clients that are planning an unmedicated home birth (a home birth being unmedicated, by nature).

A labour comb works by:

  • Providing acupressure in your hand

  • Giving your brain a competing sensory input “Pain Gateway Theory”

  • Helping take the edge off contractions and create a “labour ritual”

Choosing a wooden version:

  • Feels warm and home-y

  • Avoids plastics

  • It’s pretty to look at and can be used to comb your new babies hair for years to come 🤍

Doula tip: Grab 2! My clients who end up loving labour combs typically use one in each hand.

🫧Scent-Free, Low-Tox Hand Soap (for Frequent Handwashing)

👉 Fragrance-Free ATTITUDE Foaming Hand Soap (Made in Canada, EWG Verified)

Why it makes the list:

At a home birth, there is a lot of handwashing.

Your midwives, birth partner, and support team will be:

  • washing hands frequently

  • moving between spaces

  • supporting you in very hands-on ways

Having a scent-free, minimal-ingredient hand soap at each sink:

  • Reduces extra fragrances in the space, which can add to sensory overwhelm during labour

  • Supports a calm, non-irritating environment

  • Is more hygienic than shared bar soap (From a doula, pleaseeee don’t do bar soap 😅)

  • Aligns with a minimal-ingredient home environment

Doula tip: Have a pump bottle (or two) of alcohol-based hand sanitizer around your home for quick hand sanitizing when needed.

Organic Cotton Disposable Postpartum Underwear

👉 Organyc Certified Organic Cotton Disposable Period Underwear

Why it makes the list:

Postpartum recovery is not the time to overcomplicate things (at least in the immediate postpartum).

These organic cotton disposable underwear:

  • Are breathable and gentle on sensitive skin

  • Free from synthetic materials and micro-plastics

  • Easy to use in those first few days of recovery

  • Provide comfort without the pressure of laundry right away (there’s already going to be lots of laundry)

Reusable Waterproof Bed Pads (“Chucks” Pads)

👉 Utopia Bedding Washable Waterproof Incontinence Pads

Why this matters:

These are one of the most practical items you can have on hand for a home birth.

Reusable waterproof pads:

  • Protect surfaces (bed, couch, floor, birth space)

  • Provide excellent absorbency during labour, birth, and immediate postpartum

  • Replace disposable “chucks” pads (which create a lot of extra waste)

And beyond birth, they continue to be useful:

  • Diaper-free time

  • Baby changing stations

  • Potty training later on

Doula tip: If you’re concerned about not having enough on hand, you can always purchase some extra, disposable options that you can return if they are sealed and unused.

A Gentle Reminder

This isn’t about doing a “perfect” eco home birth.

Birth is raw, it’s messy. And sometimes convenience matters.

This is simply about:

  • making a few intentional swaps where you can

  • creating a space that feels calm, but functional

  • choosing items that align with how you want to experience your birth
