What to Expect When Giving Birth at Kootenay Lake Hospital (Nelson, BC)

Emergency Hospital Entrance at Kootenay Lake Hospital in Nelson, BC. The Maternity Unit can be accessed through these doors after hours (7pm - 7am).

If you're pregnant and living in Nelson, BC or the surrounding West Kootenays, there's a good chance Kootenay Lake Hospital is where your baby will make their entrance into the world. And if you've never given birth there before - or if this is your first birth altogether - it's completely normal to have questions about what that experience will actually look like.

As a Birth Doula & Childbirth Educator serving families in Nelson, BC and across the West Kootenays, I've had the privilege of supporting births at Kootenay Lake Hospital. In this post, I want to share what you can expect, how to prepare, and how having a doula by your side can make a real difference - no matter how, or where, you choose to give birth.

About Kootenay Lake Hospital's Maternity Unit

Kootenay Lake Hospital (KLH) is a Level 1 Community Hospital operated by Interior Health, located right in the heart of Nelson, BC. The Maternity unit handles over 320 births per year and is equipped with three delivery suites, including one birthing tub for those interested in hydrotherapy during labour or hospital water birth. The unit also has 24/7 obstetrical and anesthesia consultation support, which means pain relief options like epidurals are available around the clock.

The hospital works closely with all of the local maternity care practices (Apple Tree Maternity, Blue Heron Midwifery, Colibri Midwifery, Kootenay Born Midwifery). If you live in the area, have a low-to-moderdate risk pregnancy (pregnancies deemed higher-risk or pre-term babies may be referred for support at Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital in Trail, BC) and are choosing to birth in hospital, chances are you will be giving birth at KLH.

Your Care Providers: Who Might Be There

Depending on who is providing your prenatal care, your birth support team at Kootenay Lake Hospital may include:

  • A registered midwife (if you're a midwifery client)

  • A family physician or obstetrician (if you're under physician care, or in a multi-disciplinary care model, like Apple Tree Maternity )

  • Labour and delivery nurses

  • An anesthesiologist (if you request pain medication or in the case of a cesarean)

  • A paediatric or neonatal team if baby requires some extra support

And of course - your support people! You are welcome to bring your partner, a support person, and a doula to your birth. Having a doula present means you have consistent, continuous support throughout labour, separate from your clinical care team.

The Labour & Delivery Experience at KLH

When you arrive at the hospital, you'll be assessed by a nurse and your care provider (this doesn’t need to include a cervical exam if you do not desire to have one!). You will be settled into one of the delivery suites - private rooms where you'll labour, give birth, and spend your ‘golden hours’ immediately after birth. A few hours after your baby is born, you'll typically move to a postpartum room to rest, recover and enjoy those precious early hours with your newborn.

Here are a few things families often find helpful to know before they arrive:

  • Bring your birth plan! Most providers will review your birth plan in advance and will send a copy to keep on file at KLH. That said, it never hurts to have an extra paper copy on hand.

  • The birthing tub is available for labouring families who would like to labour, or even birth in the water! (NOTE: Availability depends on the suite and whether or not the birthing tub adjacent to your room is in use). TIP: If you would like to access the tub for your labour and/or birth, make note of this on your birth plan.

  • Epidurals and other pain relief options are available around the clock.

  • Partners and support people (including doulas) are welcome throughout labour and birth.

  • After hours (7pm to 7am), access to the hospital is through the emergency department entrance. You will need to buzz in through the intercom once you have entered through the first sliding doors.

What a Doula Adds to Your Hospital Birth

A common question I hear is: "If I'll have nurses and a midwife or doctor at the Kootenay Lake Hospital, why would I also need a doula?"

It's a totally fair question - I asked the same thing 8+ years ago when I was expecting my first baby (SPOILER: We hired a doula, and she was incredible) and the answer comes down to continuity and presence. Your nursing team will change shifts on a 12-hour rotation. Your midwife or doctor will come-and-go, and may be attending another birth at the same time. Your partner is likely to need breaks, food, or their own emotional support through labour and birth.

Your doula is there continuously - from the early hours of labour through to the birth and the “golden hour” postpartum. I provide:

  • Physical comfort measures like massage, counter-pressure, positioning support, and TENS machine guidance

  • Emotional reassurance and encouragement throughout every phase of labour

  • Evidence-based information to help you understand all of your options and feel confident in your decisions

  • Support for your partner, so they can show up fully without feeling alone in the room

  • A calm, grounded presence. No matter how long labour takes or how the plan changes

Birth is unpredictable. Plans shift. What doesn't have to shift is feeling supported and never alone.

Planning a Home Birth in the West Kootenays?

Not every Nelson-area family plans to birth at KLH. If you're exploring home birth, the local midwives and maternity care practices support out-of-hospital births in the area as well. A doula can be a game-changer for a home birth too - offering continuous support while your midwife manages clinical care.
